So, you decided to get a hammock – congrats! You’re on your way to new levels of personal comfort and relaxation! Now the next decision you’re facing is how do you set up a hammock? But don’t worry, we have a few options when it comes to hammock setup depending on your needs and what is available to you. Just ask yourself three questions:
- What type of hammock are you hanging? Classic hammocks like our Brisa or Flora hammocks will need extra slack to create a sling or banana shape. A hammock with spreader bar like Alisio or Alabama will need a tighter suspension. This is because in a classic hammock, you become the spreader bar allowing you to create the shape and tension you prefer based on how you lay, while a spreader bar hammock has a preset shape and that open hammock feeling from the get-go.
- Will you be hanging your hammock outdoors or indoors? Outdoor hammocks like a backyard hammock or patio hammock can be installed using hammock suspension kits - the TreeMount which is great for hanging between trees or rounded posts and can be easily packed up and taken on the road, or the CasaMount which is a great permanent option for installing with squared wooden beams or posts. CasaMount is also recommended for indoor hammocks like bedroom hammocks or living room hammocks if you have wooden beams, drywall with wooden studs, or solid masonry (concrete) to drill into.
- How much space do you need? No matter what suspension set you use, your suspension points should be at least 3 meters (around 10 feet) apart for the ultimate hammock shape—preferably between 3.5 and 4.5 meters (12-15 feet), depending on the length/size of your hammock. Each of our hammock product pages will let you know exactly how much space we recommend under product details.
Not sure how to measure the space you’ll need? Just grab a long piece of rope like in the photo below to measure out the needed space for the recommended sling or banana shape for classic hammocks, or a tighter fit for a spreader bar hammock! )
But what if you don’t have trees or can’t drill into your walls? For those of you with limited outdoor space, no drill, or renters who don’t want to lose that deposit -been there myself- you’re not out of luck! Both our Double and Kingsize hammocks have compatible LA SIESTA hammock stands designed to complement both hammock sizes without the hassle of finding the perfect set of trees or wall studs. Nautico, our metal hammock stand, or Elipso, our wooden arc hammock stand are excellent choices for both indoor or outdoor free standing hammock hanging. Just be sure to select the same size stand as your hammock (Double hammock with Double stand or a Kingsize hammock with Kingsize stand).
